Xinhuanet reports that a new privacy protection standard for companies collecting consumer information in China will go into effect on February 1. Published in November and the first of its kind in the nation, the “non-obligatory guideline” states that data collectors should obtain consent prior to the collection and processing of an individual’s sensitive personal information, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The guideline categorizes personal data as “general” or “sensitive” and permits general data collection if an individual does not object, the report states. Organizations should have specific and clear purposes for collecting data and delete the information once it is no longer needed.
