The Hungarian government must modify some of its new constitutional measures by Tuesday or face potential infringement proceedings by the European Commission (EC), European Voice reports. The commission is troubled by changes to Hungary's constitution that took effect on January 1 and may flout EU law. In particular, the independence of the country's data protection commissioner has come into question. In a statement yesterday, EC President José Manuel Barroso said the commission will make "appropriate decisions" on Tuesday in Strasbourg. The Hungarian government passed a law in July that saw the role of the country's independent data protection ombudsman subsumed by a new National Data Protection and Freedom of Information Authority.
