AFP reports that the U.S. and the European Union (EU) have signed a draft agreement on sharing passenger information for flights between both regions. The pact must now be approved by the European Council and European Parliament. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström said the agreement "contains robust safeguards for European citizens' privacy, without undermining the effectiveness of the agreement in terms of EU and U.S. security." U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement this "highlighted the U.S.'s continued commitment and efforts to work with EU counterparts towards an umbrella agreement." Meanwhile, a German MEP said that the agreement "is nothing more than a repackaging of the old agreement..."
