In a communiqué to be issued later this week, G-8 leaders are expected to call for stronger regulation of the Internet, including strengthened privacy protections, The New York Times reports. The document is expected to call for "an international approach to protecting users' personal data," and to "encourage the development of common approaches...based on fundamental rights that protect personal data, whilst allowing the legitimate transfer of data," according to a Daily Mail report. At yesterday's opening of the e-G8 Forum in Paris--a prelude event to the Group of Eight meeting taking place later this week in Deauville, France--global Internet leaders and heads of state discussed and debated some of the issues that have provoked the attention of the G-8.
