California Sen. Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) gave testimony Tuesday to the Senate Judiciary Committee on his proposed do-not-track bill, SB 761. If passed, the bill would enable Internet users to opt out of being tracked by websites; require businesses to disclose how tracked data is being used, and subject violators to civil action for damages. Lowenthal was joined by three witnesses in support of the legislation, but several witnesses were present to oppose it, saying it would hurt business and the job market, reports this Daily Dashboard exclusive.
