The European Commission (EC) launched a public consultation January 28 concerning a possible future agreement between the European Union and United States on personal data protection and data sharing for law enforcement purposes. The EC is seeking public comments regarding the purpose, scope, nature and data protection principles that should be addressed in such an agreement. For example, the commission asks whether an agreement should only allow data transfers between governments or permit transfers from private entities to law enforcement authorities, as well. The commission will accept public comments through March 12.
