Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart has determined the RCMP did not violate the privacy rights of gun owners when it released their names, phones numbers and firearm information to a private company conducting a survey about Canada's gun registry, the Windsor Star reports. In dismissing the complaint filed by former public safety minister Peter Van Loan last September, Stoddart notes the survey company was acting as a government contractor, was properly screened and deleted all raw data after delivering the survey to the RCMP. A spokesman for current Public Safety Commissioner Vic Toews, however, is quoted as saying the office "maintains that the use of long-gun owners' personal information was intrusive and inappropriate."
