Microsoft has announced that it will further reduce the length of time it holds data entered into its Bing search engine, the New York Times reports. The decision comes in response to criticism related to search data management from within the European Union and will be implemented over the next 18 months for users everywhere, not just in the EU. Professor Hendrik Speck of the University of Applied Sciences in Kaiserslautern, Germany predicts that the move will prompt Bing competitors to follow suit, saying, "Google and other engines are starting to realize that consumers around the world are placing an increasing value on privacy and that can have business consequences."
