Speaking to members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Brussels yesterday, commissioner-designate Viviane Reding outlined her top priority areas should she be confirmed to the post of Commissioner of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Europolitics reports. Data protection, she said, "will be high on my agenda." Reding said that privacy protections need to be strengthened in the areas of law enforcement, crime prevention and international relations. "The fight against terrorism is important, there can be no doubt," she said. "But I am not convinced that we really need so many new laws and new restrictions on our citizens' privacy to achieve this purpose."
