Capital in the Capitol

You may be reading this column between events while attending the IAPP's annual Privacy Summit at the Renaissance Washington DC Hotel. If so (or if you wish you were), you are doubtless struck by the energy that pervades the U.S. Capitol; when you are here, the world seems abuzz with activity, and that's certainly the case within the privacy community during the Summit.

Ongoing developments in the courts and within agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission keep privacy professionals on their collective toes, and these critical steps in the evolution of privacy are being covered in depth during the Summit. But while we're here, focused on Washington, there are many significant and exciting developments taking place overseas.

A quick perusal of this month's Global Privacy Dispatches points to important privacy decisions being made within the EU court system, which today involve Spain, but that have widespread implications, not only across Europe, but possibly the globe. In the UK we learn of how that country is grappling with the issue of data breach from a legal standpoint, as well as the always sensitive issue of public surveillance.

Meanwhile, our friends in the Netherlands are confronting the practice of photocopying the identification of hotel guests, which, in spite of a requirement by law enforcement authorities to obtain and record guest identification, has been determined to be a privacy violation. To our north, Canadian privacy commissioners have united in opposition to enhanced driver's licenses over questions regarding data use and access.

It can be difficult to keep track of everything that transpires month to month, which is why the IAPP continues to work to provide its members with a growing list of benefits that go directly to alerting you to critical developments in privacy.

In addition to the Daily Dashboard, INSIDE 1to1: Privacy, and The Privacy Advisor, this month we're launching a new subscription service exclusively for IAPP members — Privacy Tracker. Designed specifically to keep pace with legal developments in the world of privacy, we're certain Privacy Tracker will become an indispensable resource for you. Check out our ad in this issue of the Advisor, and look for more information from the IAPP.

Enjoy!
