Joe Petro

Joe is a globally recognized expert on financial fraud detection, prevention, and investigations, including cybercrime and terrorism. The former managing director of Citigroup Security and Investigative Services, Joe oversaw all dimensions of security for a premier financial services company with 200 million customers in 140 countries around the globe. Before his 20-year career with Citigroup and its predecessors, he was a special agent and senior executive in the United States Secret Service, where he supervised the protection of presidents, vice presidents, and foreign dignitaries.

Joe has been a front-line leader during two decades of rapid change in the security challenges confronting financial institutions. From 1993 to 2013, he was responsible for fraud prevention and investigations, physical security and executive protection for Citigroup and its worldwide subsidiary and legacy companies. He coordinated the company’s response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has dealt with security, fraud and cyber threats on every continent where Citigroup operates.

From 1971 to 1993, Joe was a special agent and senior executive with the United States Secret Service where he served in numerous operational and management positions. He supervised protective operations for the president, vice president and foreign dignitaries as well as the Washington field office. Earlier in his career, Joe had been assigned to investigations, intelligence, training, internal affairs and public affairs. He also was selected as special assistant to the secretary of the Treasury, where he advised and assisted department officials on financial crime enforcement policy and worked with the Justice Department, congressional committees and other federal agencies on law enforcement issues.

Prior to his career in the Secret Service, Joe was an officer in the U.S. Navy for four years. He served aboard the USS Plymouth Rock (LSD 29) and commanded River Patrol Boats (PBRs) in Vietnam assigned to River Divisions 512 and 534. Near the end of his combat tour, he served as the Senior Naval Adviser to a Vietnamese River Division.
