Tanguy Van Overstraeten heads the Linklaters Global Data Protection and Privacy Practice as well as the Technology Media and Telecommunications Practice in Belgium.

With almost 25 years of experience as a lawyer, Van Overstraeten has developed a comprehensive practice in the field of information technology, with a focus on data protection projects, electronic communications, IT agreements and outsourcing. Labeled a “leading individual” in the IT field, he is described as “top notch,” a “star” with “broad expertise in this area” (Legal 500, 2012).

Van Overstraeten has extensive experience in advising multinationals on local and international large-scale transactions and regulatory projects. Among recent prominent cases, he has advised SWIFT in its dealings with European and national data protection authorities; U.S. and Japanese heavy industry players in their implementation of global codes of conduct covering privacy and information governance, including whistle-blowing procedures; JP Morgan Chase in the approval process of its binding corporate rules; an automotive part manufacturer in the data protection aspects of a forensic process required in the framework of a regulatory investigation; and a U.S. multinational in the rollout of a Vontu software application as part of a surveillance process at the work place.

Van Overstraeten is an active member of the Digital Economy Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce to the EU, vice chair of the ICT Task Force of the British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium, co-chair of the Brussels IAPP KnowledgeNets and a member of the IAPP’s European Advisory Board. He lectures on data protection at the University of Brussels (Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management) and speaks regularly at major conferences on data protection issues worldwide.  

Van Overstraeten graduated from the University of Brussels. He is a fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation and he also holds a LLM degree from the University of Chicago Law School.
