Dr. Dennis Desai trained as a general surgeon and obtained his fellowship in both Canada and the United States in 1992. After 15 years of practice, he took on the position of medical officer at the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA). This non-profit group is the primary provider of medico-legal protection to Canadian physicians with approximately 90,000 members. For the last six years, Desai has been providing physicians with advice and support on privacy issues and other medico-legal matters. Last year he was promoted to a senior management position and was chosen to take on the role of Deputy Privacy Officer. This role involves not just the management of privacy policies and procedures at the CMPA, but also providing input at both the federal and provincial levels on privacy legislation related to the healthcare field.
