Alec Campbell is the president and principal consultant of Excela Associates, which he founded in 2006. Utilizing a network of seasoned associates, Excela provides freedom of information and privacy consulting services across Canada.

Campbell has been involved in the administration of freedom of information and privacy legislation since 1993. He was the first freedom of information and privacy coordinator at the Alberta Department of Labour. He held directorships with privacy responsibilities in both the government of Alberta and Alberta’s Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. As executive director responsible for Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, he led the expansion of the act to the education and municipal sectors and founded the Information Access and Protection of Privacy Certificate Program at the University of Alberta. In the commissioner’s office, he led the development of that office’s privacy impact assessment process.

From 2001 to 2006, Campbell was responsible for information technology privacy functions in the Office the Chief Information Officer in the Government of Alberta. He coordinated privacy policy and assessment for information technology operations across government and led the development of an award-winning privacy architecture.
