Nicholas Merker, CIPP/IT
Ice Miller LLP
Nick Merker is an associate in Ice Miller's intellectual property and litigation group. His practice includes patent drafting and prosecution; advice and counsel to companies regarding privacy and security regulations, practices and policies; drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements, including software and SaaS agreements; infringement risk assessments; information technology audit preparation; and litigation support.
Merker also focuses his practice on Internet technologies, namely, new uses of social media and cloud services. His work with these technologies will focus on data security and privacy. Through his appreciation of these technologies he has also started writing blog posts for The Ice Loop.
Prior to his legal career, Merker worked in a variety of systems, network and security engineering roles throughout a multitude of industries. Notably, he served as a systems, network and security engineer for Classified Ventures and Cars.com in Chicago, IL, for five years. Additionally, he served in a systems engineering capacity for the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and the Bioacoustics Research Lab at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana.
Merker holds the following Industry Certifications: Certified Information Systems Security Professional (1057505), RedHat Certified Technician and Certified Information Privacy Professional/Information Technology.
Merker's career started at the age of 14 where he volunteered his services at a hometown Internet service provider. There, he developed a passion for systems, network and security engineering, which drove his career into that field.
Merker earned his juris doctorate from Chicago–Kent College of Law in the top 14% of his class in 2010. He was affiliated with the Chicago–Kent Law Review in his time there.
Merker joined Ice Miller LLP in 2011. He is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
