Data privacy makes it onto the agenda of the G8 meeting in Deauville, France.

Researchers at Stanford University and University of California at Berkeley uncover “supercookies.”

Sony PlayStation Network breach, one of the largest-ever Internet security attacks, impacts millions worldwide.

Regulatory agencies across the world increase enforcement and audit activities; significant fines are issued; and civil courts see an uptick in privacy-related litigation.

The U.S. Supreme Court rules on several privacy-related themes—employee background checks; GPS tracking; corporations’ privacy rights; and pharmaceuticals’ data use practices.

IAPP Milestones

The IAPP’s annual Global Privacy Summit is held in Washington, DC, on March 9–11, 2011, with a record number of attendees.

The Center for Democracy and Technology receives the 2011 Privacy Leadership Award for their ongoing innovation and advocacy in online privacy.

The fourth-annual IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium takes place in Toronto, ON, May 4–6.

The IAPP publishes Building a Privacy Program - A Practitioner's Guide in May.

Rita Di Antonio joins the IAPP as the Managing Director of IAPP Europe.

The Practical Privacy Series grows, adding more dates and locations, with June conferences in San Francisco, Atlanta and Boston. In December, the series returns to Washington, DC.

The IAPP publishes European Privacy: Law and Practice for Data Protection Professionals in September.

The IAPP Privacy Academy is held in Dallas, TX, September 14–16.

The sixth annual Privacy Dinner and Awards Ceremony are held in conjunction with the Privacy Academy on September 15.

The IAPP presents the HP-IAPP Privacy Innovation Awards to Warner Bros. Entertainment (large organization category); Ontario Telemedicine Network (small organization category); and Heartland Payment Systems (most innovative privacy technology category).

Jennifer Barrett Glasgow, CIPP/US, Executive for Global Public Policy and Privacy at Acxiom, wins the IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award for her outstanding leadership, knowledge and creativity in the field of privacy and data protection.

IAPP Europe forms strategic alliances with key European data protection associations in Spain, the UK and the Netherlands: Associación Profesional Española de Privacidad (APEP), the Data Protection Forum and Nederlands Genootschap van Functionarissen voor de Gegevensbescherming (NGFG).

The IAPP Europe Data Protection Congress returns to Paris, November 29–30. It is a sold-out event.

On December 1, the IAPP officially launches the CIPP/E designation—the first professional credential specific to European data protection professionals that is part of a comprehensive principles-based framework and knowledge base in information privacy.
