IAPP Gears Up for Fall Focus on Government Privacy Certification

Special training and testing programs to become available for federal and state government employees

YORK, Maine - August 22, 2005 -- The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the world's largest association of professionals in the privacy industry, today announced a special series of training and testing events in support of the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/G) program, the first publicly available privacy certification for government professionals.

On September 1, the IAPP will host a live Webcast presented by Julie McEwen, CIPP/G, Principal Information Privacy & Security Engineer and Privacy Practice Leader at MITRE, a federally funded research and development center based in Maryland. The 90-minute interactive tutorial will cover all of the government privacy laws, policies and practices addressed in the CIPP/G certification exam.

On September 9, one week following the live Webcast, the IAPP will offer the last Washington D.C.-area CIPP/G certification exam in 2005 at the 11th National HIPAA Summit, Renaissance Washington D.C. Hotel. The exam will be preceded on September 7 with an all-day CIPP/G training course, also at the HIPAA Summit.

The IAPP launched the CIPP/G program earlier this year with a founding grant from IBM Corporation and the support of leading privacy executives from the U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Office of Management and Budget, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, California Department of Consumer Affairs, MITRE Corporation and SRA International.

"The CIPP/G program is instrumental in helping government employees understand the issues and obligations surrounding privacy and security today," said Harriet Pearson, Chief Privacy Officer of IBM. "The information and training found in the CIPP/G program are unparalleled in their breadth and depth."

"IAPP is offering an exciting lineup of fall training and testing to meet the demand of this highly regarded program," said J. Trevor Hughes, IAPP's  Executive Director. "Our goal is to train and reward government privacy professionals with a prestigious recognition of their expertise and contribution in the privacy field."

Government privacy professionals are following the accomplishments of their predecessors - the first class of privacy professionals successfully completed their CIPP/G examination earlier this summer - by participating in this fall's events:
