Noted Experts to Speak on the ROI of Privacy at the IAPP Academy

Philadelphia, PA – July 23, 2003 – The International Association of Privacy
Professionals announced today that noted privacy leaders, Larry Ponemon, Ph.D. and
Martha Rogers Ph.D., will each present keynote addresses at the upcoming IAPP
Academy, October 29-31, in Chicago. The focus of these two presentations will be on
the return on investment (ROI) achieved through implementation of responsible privacy
practices within organizations. Both are partners at Peppers and Rogers Group based in
Norwalk, CT.

Dr. Ponemon will present the results of the Ponemon Institute's Privacy Trust Surveys
(PTS), which capture the perceptions of consumers within a given industry sector. The
PTS studies reveal that customer trust is linked to corporate privacy initiatives around
communication, outreach and preference management. The implication of this research is
consistent with learned views in the privacy and strategic marketing community. That is,
companies managing the privacy commitment as an integral and holistic part of their
product branding or marketplace image will engender a higher level of customer trust
and, ultimately, better individuated data. This, in turn, will result in a more effective
marketing effort, increased revenues and higher ROI.

Dr. Rogers, named by Business 2.0 as “one of the nineteen most influential business
gurus of all time,” is an internationally recognized customer strategy expert and co-author
with Don Peppers of the best-selling one-to-one book series. Dr. Rogers offers a more
constructive and competitively advantageous viewpoint on identifying customers at each
contact point, linking the data about each customer, and protecting the security of that
data as the company's most valuable asset. She will address how fast, easy, and
affordable interactivity has changed the role of the customer's identity within the
organization, and what the business implications of "privacy" are in a discussion that
takes privacy far beyond a "compliance" issue to a relationship building opportunity that
can help grow customer value.
